[TN-Bird] GH Owl & Bald Eagle highlight Ashland City visit

Super Sunday was a nice day to visit our sister at her new home in Ashland City
and of course, look for birds at a new spot. Walking in and around her yard
turned up a pretty nice list including 6 sparrow species plus an apparently
aberrant Field Sparrow with a dark face and unstriped head. Looked something
like a juvenile Redpoll without the breast streaking.
A trip down Lindahl Pky included a walk out on the abandoned railroad section
and trestle over the water (not for the faint of heart). From there a few
ducks, geese, grebes, a flyover from a beautiful adult Bald Eagle and a
juvenile Red-Shouldered Hawk were observed. The prize for the precarious hike
was the discovery of a Great-Horned Owl's nest with one egg, just over the left
side of the 2nd stone foundation in the metal beam structure. (We quickly
retreated upon discovery.) From the Dry Fork bridge on Hwy 12, we saw the eagle
flying, perching on brush in the water, and eventually eating after returning
from a hunt. The ducks seemed to find the eagle most exciting and always rose
from the water for a better look when it flew near!
We are looking forward to our next visit and a chance to add to our Ashland
City bird list. Please don't disturb Ms. GH Owl, as the nest can best be
observed from the Dry Fork bridge about 400yds away, left of the stone column.
