Mississippi River landing
Tiptonville, Tn.
Lake Co.
Black Bayou
Sunday was a beautiful day to get out and do a little birding after breakfast.
I drove down to Tiptonville to get gas and then on to the River. Usually I put
my Binocs up and lately nothing has been there with the high water. Today there
was a bonanza waiting for me. There were ducks strung out up and down in the
water by the sandbar and behind the jetty to the North. Mostly Canvasback. At
least 1500 plus and at least 250 Goldeneye and 100 plus Scaup. Not a lot of
gulls but there was one Thayers and an Imm. Herring. among the Ringbilled. Had
another suprise when the Old Coot himself showed up. Jeff has been a stranger
up here. The birds behind the Jetty were really a distance and the heat waves
were not any help.
I later made it out to the Eagles nests on the levee by Lake #9 in Fulton Co.
Ky. They have not made any effort to mate again that has been observed by the
bus tours or photographers. The pair was in the area. At sunset they were
sitting side by side on a limb over looking the river. Maybe they are talking
about it. Its not too late. The other nesting pair has been seen at the nest
frequently the last few days so maybe soon they will be sitting. I try to stay
away from there and I know one photographer uses the lower road trying not to
harass them. There needs to be some good signage there to remind folks to keep
their distance. This new nest tree is close to the levee. Snow Geese and
White fronted everywhere. I saw a huge flock of Mallards on the ground Wed. in
Fulton Co. near Lake #9. 1000+ and a field full of Snow Geese just down the
road.
I had a small flock of Tree Sparrows in Black Bayou on Wed.
Come on migration!!
