Two White Pelicans were spotted at Cove Island (Knox County in Craig Cove
Subdivision in Lyons Bend) on Feb. 4 by resident Fred Symonds. One pelican was
spotted on both Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 not far down the river past Duncan's Boat
Dock in the Jones Bend area on Badgett Road in Knox County - another place with
no view of the river from the road.
A White Pelican was in this area last year from Mar. 21 through Mar. 27,
2005. One was also reported nearby in 2003. Another White Pelican at Cove
Island
in 1985 was the first reported in Knox County since Knox County's first record
in 1949 in Concord.

So four out of these five Knox County White Pelican records are from Cove
Island and vicinity. Makes me wonder if the birds in recent years are the same
individuals returning year after year.

I was on Cove Island today helping a Girl Scout troop put up 12 Wood Duck
boxes. About ten young girls worked very hard in the mud and snow (and briars)
for nearly four hours carrying ladders and the boxes they each had made and
helping attach them to trees. They are receiving a special award for this
project.
The girls were on the lookout for the pelican but we did not see it before we
left about 1:30. However, they did get to see a red-phased screech-owl up
close roosting in one of the older Wood Duck boxes we checked. It was very
rewarding to see young people so enthusiastic about helping wildlife.
