Hi folks,

Today I made a very short stop at the boat launch nest to the
National Guard Armory on US 129 in south Knox County. I wanted to
see what was going on on Looney Island, which is in the Tennessee
River.

Without being thorough at all - I just used binoculars through the
car windows as Allan was fussing in the back seat - I counted what I
could see from one single angle.

There are at least 75 nest. At least 18 have a Great Blue Heron on
them. I would assume that there are some night herons out there, but
I did not identify any.

I am sure that someone in a boat could get a very accurate count
without having to disturb the birds by getting on to the island.
Someone with more flexibility than I had could do a lot better than I
did simply by looking at the islad from 3 different vantage points
along the road. But I just wanted to get a minimum, and that is what
I did.

I hope the snow brings some Pine Siskins to our feeders!

Charlie
