All,
Becky and I were at the spot at Nine Mile Crossroads from 5:45 to 6:20pm
Eastern yesterday. We were joined later by Tommy and Virginia Curtis and
another couple. Upon arrival, female Northern Harrier was keeping watch from
a
fense post to the right of the pond. Other species were eastern screech
owl(hrd), red-tailed hawk, eastern meadowlark, song sparrow, European
starling, and
wild turkey(hrd). We did not hear the great horned owl heard by others.
Once the first short-eared owl took to the air(seemingly right by the pond),
it was not long before 4 were in the air, with three in the same tree at
once. The female harrier seemed to be the most aggressive in harassing the
owls, although, a male harrier appeared from the woods behind us. As we left,
the harriers had forced the SE owls to hunt in a field over the hill to the
west of the woods behind the pond.
Great year bird, and a new state bird for Becky.

Enjoyed supper at the Cookie Jar afterwards.
