[TN-Bird] perspective

I can sympathize with the irate birder from Minn. I must say however, that
people who come from urban areas out to the country to view, hunt, harvest etc.
have a bad reputation. I realize this is a serious generalization but
unfortunately well earned. My farm has a north facing bluff which runs 1/2 mile
or more along a county road. An amazing variety of wild plants grows in this
protected area. I was sitting atop the bluff one day and watched as a car with
two middle aged women pulled up and stopped , got out a shovel and started to
dig up some Dutchman's Britches. I called down to tell them not to dig, they
replied that they wouldn't but proceeded to do just that. Knowing that I
couldn't get down the 100 foot bluff to stop them in time they cleaned out the
Dutchmen and sped off. I have no clue as to how the ginseng has managed to
survive. The area is down to one specie of trillium. Still lots of wood poppies
but the number does seem to diminish each year. This 100 yard X 1/2 mile strip
is the favorite haunt of barred owls and Coopers hawk not to mention dozens of
smaller species.
Not everyone out here in the hinterland is a backwoods bumpkin. Some of us
are reasonably good stewards of the land AND own shoes and DON'T use tobacco.
Still, I feel for the birder. Point of view is everything.
