Hi folks,
Today I built my Blount County list up to 102 on the back of some
fine people.
First, at Heritage High School, I FINALLY found the Horned Larks that
Tom Howe found, and which Warren Bielenberg and Jean Alexander both
gave me directions to. Only took 5 trips...
Next I was on to Phelps Diary Pond. I think the cows now recognize
my car... The pond had more ducks than I've seen in the short time
I've been aware of it. It had more species and individuals than
Hitch, which I take to be unusual.
Phelps Pond had:
1 Greater Scaup (yeah! #100)
2 Lesser Scaup
1 drake Wood Duck
many Ring-necked Ducks
20+ Redheads
many Mallards
1 Ruddy Duck
3 Buffleheads
many Canada Geese
1 American Wigeon which had a dirty head - I tried to turn it into a
eurasian, without success
Then I went to Scenic Point where I found only 1 of the 3 Horned
Grebes which Jean and Warren saw. Once again, I saw a single
Red-breasted Merganser there. I've seen one there several times, but
Jean and Warren had 2 the other day.
I also had 2 Herring Gulls in 2nd year plumage. I think Tom Howe had
3 last week
Finally, Hitch Pond. I still haven't seen the Merlin that is
apparently hanging out there, but I did see one hen Blue-winged Teal,
thanks again to a tip from Tom. I likely would have missed her, had
I not been looking really hard. That white area by the base of the
bill and the thin dark line through the eye were enough to ID her,
but not to draw my attention to her quickly. I wonder if I've been
missing her all along? She looked more like a hen Gadwall (of which
there are many) than I'd thought.
The number of Redheads was down, but I think that is where some of
the Phelps birds came from. Ring-necked Ducks, Mallards, and one
Northern Shoveller, several Bufflehead rounded things out.
On my way back I stopped at the Stilt Pond and found a nice drake
Green-winged Teal.
Go Patriots!!!
Charlie
