The 13th annual Cherokee Indian Heritage and Sandhill Crane Viewing Days
will be held with special programs on Saturday, February 5 in the =
Birchwood
School, and crane viewing will take place Saturday and Sunday, February =
5-6
at the nearby Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge. Knowledgeable volunteers will be =
on
hand with telescopes and printed information. An estimated 12,000 cranes =
are
currently in the area including one rare endangered whooping crane.
Additionally, a new viewing platform has been completed at the Cherokee
Removal Memorial site.
Some of this year's program topics include the Sequoyah Trail, Pinson
Mounds, Moccasin Bend National Park, Saw-whet Owl banding, and an update =
on
Operation Migration.
There will also be exhibits, good food, music and artwork.
Because of the unique combination of archeology, history and wildlife in =
the
area, the first weekend in February is set aside each year for experts =
to
present their knowledge in programs held at the Birchwood School. =20
These events are free to the public, and all areas are handicap =
accessible.
For more information, contact Meigs County Tourism at (423) 344-5850. =
For
specific program information, call event coordinator Ken Dubke at (423)
499-3584, or David Aborn at (423) 425-5236.
