[TN-Bird] student internship in Smokies

If you know a high school student who is interested in science,
please pass this along.

One of the projects involved is the banding station that I manage.

Announcing an excellent summer enrichment opportunity for high school
students who have completed their junior or senior year in 2004! 
Earn money while learning about Great Smoky Mountains National Park
and contributing to scientific research and education in the park. 
These positions do not include housing and are intended for students
within an approximately one-hour drive of Great Smoky Mountains
Institute at Tremont in Townsend, TN.  

Job Announcement: Summer Research Assistants

Wanted: Students (juniors or seniors) who are hard-working, 
self-motivating, and enthusiastic about science and nature. Prior
experience is not required; we¹ll teach you what you need to know.

Job Description: Summer Research Assistants will work on a variety of
research projects,including several that are part of the Great Smoky
Mountains All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI). Research likely
will
include studies of birds, salamanders, snails, bees, ferns, moths,
and other organisms. As needed, assistants may be asked to help with
other study subjects and may be asked to assist visiting researchers
or park resource managers. Duties will include both outdoor work
(collecting of specimens, behavioral observations) and indoor work
(identifying specimens and preparing them for museums, entering data
in a computer database).
Assistants may be asked to show the research projects to others and
assist with teaching. Assistants will be employees of the Great Smoky
Mountains Institute, a private, not-for-profit educational center
within Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Job Location: Based around the campus of the Great Smoky Mountains 
Institute at Tremont, near Townsend, TN. Some research will be
conducted elsewhere in the park.

Job Dates and Hours: Ten 30-hour work weeks from early June through
early August. We will try to work around other commitments when
possible. Ideal start date is June 1.

Wages: $6.00 per hour; no insurance, housing, or retirement. 
Transportation to and from work is the responsibility of the
employee. This job is not to exceed 400 hours.

Who May Apply: Students who finish their junior or senior years of
high school in 2004.
