Carroll Lake & vicinity (Carroll Co.)
I made a quick trip by Carroll Lake, (just south of McKenzie off of Hwy
22) a small TWRA administered lake, after a friend telling me about a
lot of ducks being present the last few days. This cold spell has really
put birds in here, as it seems to have done across the state. I counted
184 Canvasbacks, 148 Ring-necks, and 5 Lesser Scaup, for by far the most
ducks I've ever seen on this lake. The Cans were a real treat, being
much closer than my usual looks at them. I had hoped for Greater Scaup,
which I occasionally get here, but none of the Lessers were even trying
to look like Greaters :')
On the way there, I passed through the area that for the past 2 winters
a rufous-morph Western Red-tailed Hawk has shown up late in the winter,
and it was finally back surveying the usual areas, making this 3 years
in a row.
Good birding!!
