I feel that it is the same bird and that instead of a Dark morph Rough legged
that it is a Dark Morph Red tail Hawk. Sorry for any confusion. The bird was
seen on the Greak River Rd in Lake Co. Tn about 1/4-1/2 of a mile south of
hwy 79. Nancy Moore

Good detective work Nancy. This bird has been in that exact location for over
a month along with a dark morph Harlan's Red-tail. They do not hang too
closely together but both can be seen rather easily if you go through the area
searching the tree line and stop far enough away to get a scope on them. The
Harlan's is also a very dark bird with little to no white evident on the body
but
the upper tail is mottled gray with dark vertical marks. Both are very nice
birds but very shy and don't let you even think about looking at them before
they
fly.

Rough-legged would prefer a more open place to sit and hunt rather than this
particular area of close tree lines. Both species soar with a slight dihedral
but the narrow hand of the Rough-legged gives it a distinctive loping flight
rather unlike the stiffer beat of broader winged Red-tailed Hawk. Rough-legged
would be very unlikely to fly up and down a road that is completely tree
lined. When flushed it would most likely go straight way to more open areas.

Keep up the good work and keep us up to date on the hordes of birds there now
at Reelfoot. Get a Redpoll or a Snow Bunting for us..........

Good Birding!!!
