[TN-Bird] Duck River NWR

Yesterday, I spent most of Super Bowl Sunday at Duck River NWR. The habitat
is excellent, and much is accessible. On the drive over, a flyby Cooper's
Hawk in Franklin and a Barred Owl perched roadside in Fairview were nice. On
the
road to the refuge just short of the sewage ponds, 3 Eurasian Collared Doves
were seen bathing in a small pool. In the flooded field just downhill from
headquarters, a large flock of Canada Geese included several hundred Greater WF
Geese, the largest number I have ever seen in state. Only a few Snows were
seen. Bald Eagles are everywhere, only immatures were seen for some reason.
I
made it all the way to the end of the road without seeing the A White
Pelicans previously reported. As I started to drive out, about 50 of them came
sailing by. I am not sure where they landed, or whether they could be seen
from
the road.
This visit renews my frustration in reference to Cross Creeks NWR which has
been totally closed for the winter for many years for reasons that have always
seemed unclear??? It would seem that at least some compromise could be worked
out to protect the waterfowl without closing the entire area. I guess
closing the entire area is the easiest and cheapest solution.
