More License Plate Info for those interested......
This past Sunday's (1/10/02) edition of the Knoxville News-Sentinel had an
article on specialty tags for wildlife ("Wildlife not getting full plate", p.
C14). It appears that about half of the revenue generated from the sale of
"Volunteer for Wildlife" tags (black bear and wild turkey) and "Sportsman"
tags (whitetail deer) actually goes to fund the Tennessee Arts Commission and
the Highway Fund! This is not true for money generated from the sale of
plates that were available before 1998 however (Ducks Unlimited and Watchable
Wildlife "bluebird" plates for example). Apparently a law was passed in 1998
diverting funds away from the intended beneficiary of some specialty plates -
in this case wildlife - to fund arts & highways (even though the Arts
Commission already has 3 specialty tags to fund the arts)!!!!
This is truly an outrage! How such legislation could ever be propsed in
Tennessee, much less passed, is an embarrassment. This reiterates what
others have stated however regarding the purchase of "bluebird" plates (and
other plates that have been around since before 1998) as having more impact
for your dollar.
To view the complete article go to "www.knoxnews.com/sports". Search for
"license plate", then click on the title of the article "Wildlife not getting
full plate".
