[tn-bird] KY Inca Dove & TN Red-tailed's

After working twelve hours last night and again tonight, I decided (against
my better judgement) to make the trip up to Hickman KY for the Inca Dove
after work this morning. This put a serious dent in my sleep time between
shifts, but was well worth it, although come 3:00 or 4:00 o'clock this
morning I may have my doubts! On the way up to Hickman I had to stop a
couple of times for looks at a couple of the many Red-tailed Hawks on the
way. The very subdued adult Rufous-morph that has been reliable around
Gleason in Weakly Co., was in it's usual field on the way to Hickman and
soaring high overhead on the way home. This bird is more of a
"Golden-morph", as the rufous isn't the bright color usually seen on rufous
morphs, but more of a dark golden color, the same shade as the head, but
still well set off from the dark belly. Just south of Union City I had to
spend a little time getting some shots of an adult Krider's that showed some
signs of integration with Eastern. At a glance this bird was a typical
Krider's, but with a good look a couple of characters revealed a hint of
more typical Eastern marks. The bird was immaculate white below, typical of
Krider's, and very whitish headed, but there were very subdued marking on
the head which revealed a very toned-down Eastern head pattern. The tail was
white well down from the base, but terminally instead of the pinkish cast
shown by Krider's, was the typical red of an adult Red-tailed.

When I arrived at Hickman it took about 30 minutes or so to locate the
Collared-Doves, with the Inca in association as hoped for. I talked briefly
to Roseanna Denton who was in the area when I arrived, and they had the bird
in the area where I thought I saw it go in from a distance. The
Collared-Doves seemed to have taken the little Inca in as one of their own,
and hopefully this little jewel will hang around for many to enjoy. I wasn't
able to get close enough to the bird to get any straight camera shots, but I
got some decent images through the scope, some of which with Eurasian
Collared-Doves side-by-side with the Inca for a good look at the difference
in size between the species. I wasn't able to stay as long as I would have
liked to, so when the doves left the tree they were in and I lost them I
decided to come home and get what sleep I could. If anyone would like to see
some shots of the Inca Dove or of either of the Red-tailed's let me know at
my home e-mail address of 'mikectodd@xxxxxx' and I'll shoot you some pics.
Thanks to the KY birders for getting the word out about the Inca Dove just
north of the KY/TN state line.

Good birding,
