[tn-bird] Re: Spotting scopes 101

Good Morning
We have a Kowa TSN 2 which is a
70mm with a 20-60 zoom. It is a great
scope with some caveats. The zoom is
helpful at a distance up to about 40power
and then you lose resolution; more so if
the light is less. We have been on a recent birding trip and compared ours
to
others. All 80 mm scopes are better than
70mm scopes. We tried a new Leica and Swarovski and we preferred the
latter. If I had 1400 bucks to blow I'd go
with the Swarovski. Caveat: Always buy
the best you can buy because it will reward you many times over and if you
are likely to use it for 10-20 years as we
have our binoculars then it is a small yearly cost.
