Friday night was a good one, weather-wise, for owling
(last night should have been good, too, but I was too
tired from ten miles of canoeing to go out again for
owls).
Nell Moore and I surveyed 7 sites in the Scott Co.,
TN, and 3 in McCreary Co., KY, all on Divide Rd. in the
Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area on
Friday night from roughly 1910-2030 EST.
We heard one Northern Saw-whet Owl in Scott Co., TN,
about a mile south of the KY line, and we heard seven
Barred Owls; the presence of so many BDOWs may have
suppressed the tendency to vocalize in some of the
saw-whets. The one NSWO we heard gave only a single
call, a very brief "threat" call, which sounds a bit
like a very abbreviated version of an Elf Owl call.
On the way back from the survey, I stopped at the
site where I had a calling NSWO in Pickett Co., TN,
during January and played a tape; no NSWO responded,
but a BDOW flew in close and took a good look around,
presumably for the source of the vocalizing NSWO.
This year's NSWO irruption into south-central KY and
north-central TN is shaping up to be a bit less intense
than the irruption of 1999-2000, at least to judge from
results in the BSFNRRA so far this winter; however, it
is much better than the non-irruption of 2000-2001.
If you want a copy of an article on results of NSWO
surveys in the BSFNRRA during 1999-2000 and 2000-2001,
let me know, and I will send you one.
