Data entry for 52 Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) conducted
in TN, MS, and AL during the 2001-2002 CBC season has
been completed. This total is one more than last year's total
for those states and only one less than the total for the
centennial CBC year two years ago.

Many thanks to all those who participated in the 102nd
CBC, as field observers, feederwatchers, and compilers,
all of whom, by the way, once again submitted data on-line.
These data are available at the following website:

http://www.birdsource.org/CBCOutput/circle_select.html

Compilers and participants alike are urged to access the
CBC database. Should you encounter any errors, please
bring them to my attention or to the attention of the
personnel maintaining the database. Should you
encounter new insights about birds from your
view of the data, be sure to publicize those in
the various bird listservs and ultimately in the
bird literature.

In Tennessee 25 counts were conducted during
2001-2002 and their data submitted to the national
database coordinated by the National Audubon Society
and supported by many other organizations. In
Alabama data from 12 CBCs became part of the
national database. In Mississippi 15 counts were
conducted and their data submitted. The totals
for Tennessee and Mississippi came close to or
tied the highest ever totals for those states, while
the Alabama total probably represents an all-time
high total for CBCs conducted and submitted to the
national database.

Some CBCs continue to be conducted and not
integrated into the national database for one
or another of many undoubtedly good reasons. I
want to take this opportunity to ask compilers and
participants of those counts to make a special
effort to join the national CBC fold in the future,
by conducting counts according to NAS guidelines.
The small cost of this change to the people
involved will bring great benefits, by increasing
the continental coverage of early winter birds
represented by CBCs and thereby increasing
our understanding of the birds of North America
and the Western Hemisphere where the vast
majority of CBCs are now conducted.

Best wishes for 2002, Steve Stedman
