Happy New Year,
Good afternoon on a sunny but windy and soon-to-be-COLD Charlotte Park area
of West Nashville New Year's Day! It is just lovely to look outside and see
all the birds feeding at Dee's "Smorgabird" where they are filling up with
"fuel" to get them through the 15 degree temperature that is predicted for
daylight tomorrow. The wind is pretty biting, getting ready to blow the cold
front to us.
My flocks of birds just left as one group, so I knew a hawk had come into
the neighborhood. In mere seconds, I saw a beautiful adult Cooper's hawk fly
in from the back and perch on a tree just behind my deck. I got a couple of
photos of it before it gave up on the empty deck and left. The birds haven't
come back, and I saw the hawk fly past the house again a few minutes. It's
HUNGRY and is looking for a nice mourning dove or rock pigeon for its dinner.
My feeder birds just returned, and the back yard trees are teeming with
chickadees again. It wouldn't surprise me to find that "Coop" is still
hanging
around nearby in hiding. My first birds of 2008 were white-throated sparrows
and cardinals that were on the deck to feed at daybreak. It has been REALLY
busy out there all day! I just replenished all the food so that my "guests"
can fill up for the cold night ahead. I put plenty of peanut butter on apple
halves in the suet feeder for my bossy mockingbirds and all the other birds
that enjoy peanut butter.
Here's wishing you lots of happy and successful birding in 2008.
