TVA Lake, Robco Lake,
and Eagle Lake Refuge
Shelby Co. TN

At TVA Lake, in Ensley Bottoms, I watched the scaup fall in until the lake
was almost black with birds. I had counted over 3,000 when they started falling
in and the mass quickly more than doubled. Greater Scaup were present in
numbers well over 100 with 30 coming in in one flight by themselves. Four bill

tagged Lesser Scaup, a female and 3 males were present today.

At Robco, the numbers were slightly down with a leucistic Lesser Scaup still
outstanding in the mix.

At Eagle Lake, I had 15 species of waterfowl (no deep water for divers but
still 1 Ruddy and 2 Ring-necked) with 4 species of geese, 224 Snow, 17
Ross's, 3 Greater White-fronted and 22 Canada.

The big treats of the day were a rain drenched Bald Eagle that posed in a
tree about 100 yards away and Sandhill Cranes. I got some good shots through
the scope of a bad hair day for the majestic eagle, but the best treat was
hearing Sandhill Cranes and then watching 3 flying low over the wet filled
fields here in west TN.
