[TN-Bird] Buffalo River and Savannah CBC's

The Buffalo River (Lawrence County) CBC was conducted Thursday, December 28.
13 observers in 6 parties tallied 75 species, average for this count.
Highlights included Merlin, American Woodcock (3), Common Barn-Owl (3), House
Wren
and Lincoln's Sparrow. Misses included Pied-billed Grebe, most waterfowl,
Wilson's Snipe, Vesper Sparrow, Brewer's Blackbird and Pine Siskin. The only
waterfowl recorded were Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Mallard, Gadwall, Green-winged
Teal and Ring-necked Duck.
The Savannah (Hardin County) CBC was conducted Tuesday, January 2. 11
observers in 5 parties tallied a record high 112 species. Highlights included
American White Pelican (5, overhead in Savannah; 2nd count record), a variety
of
waterfowl (2 geese, all expected puddle ducks except American Wigeon, all
expected bay ducks except mergansers and Ruddy Duck), Merlin (2), Sandhill
Crane
(36, flying down river near Shiloh at dusk, 3rd count record), Forster's Tern
(5,
Bruton Branch, 1st count record), Virginia Rail (3, TDEC wetland at Walker
Springs; responded to tape; 2nd count record), Sora (1, same as Va. Rail, 2nd
count record), American Woodcock (8), Short-eared Owl (2), House Wren, Marsh
Wren (2), five warbler species including Orange-crowned (1), Palm (3), and
Common
Yellowthroat (1, marsh off Crunk Road; 1st count record), Vesper Sparrow (8),
LeConte's Sparrow (6), Lapland Longspur (42). Misses included Loggerhead
Shrike, Sedge Wren, Brewer's Blackbird, Purple Finch and Pine Siskin.
