Standifer Gap Marsh, Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN
Jan 8, 2006
Ducks: Gadwall 120, Mallard 2, N Pintail 3, N Shoveler 20
Virginia Rail 8, SORA 6
Wilson's Snipe 8 - 10
Marsh Wren 2
BLUE-HEADED VIREO ?? Seen with a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, distance 20 feet, time
30 seconds; obviously larger, longer and slower than the Ruby; 2 conspicuous
white wingbars each wing, very conspicuous complete white eye-ring and white
"spectacles" bar; grey head, greenish-gray back, white underneath, no yellow
observed, could not see beak well enough to see if hooked. A very sharp
looking bird with lots of contrast.
?? primarily because of winter date (few winter records in E Tennessee), and
because I could not get a clear view of beak.
West of turn-around at end of gravel road, across tall weeds, 20 - 30 feet into
pines on foot path.
