During this years Savannah, TN CBC, January 2, 2006, twelve birders tolerated
20-30 mph winds and 70 degree temperatures, but were able to scrape up 98
species . The best bird of the count was a Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. Most
notable miss was Barred Owl, first time missed since I have been compiling this
count (1987-present). Windy conditions definitely limited owl productivity,
with only one each Screech (seen), Great Horned and Short-eared (seen).
Other species/numbers of note included:
Pied-billed Grebe-196 (record high)
Snow Goose-8 Snow, 3 Blue
Northern Shoveler-73 (record high)
Bald Eagle-10 adult, 4 immature, 2 unknown
Merlin-2 males, 1 female
American Coot-2465 (record high), the invasion of Hydrilla makes a difference
Wilson's Snipe-0, first miss since 1990
American Woodcock-7
Fish Crow-0, not vocal on a windy day??
Brown-headed Nuthatch-11, really spreading out in the Pickwick area
House Wren-1
Marsh Wren-1, first since 1998
Palm Warbler-5
LeConte's Sparrow-8
Lapland Longspur-0, first miss since 1998
Rusty Blackbird-185
Brewer's Blackbird-50
Purple Finch-6
Pine Siskin-2
Twelve species were counted at or near record lows per party hour, probably due
in large part to the weather. Birds don't like to move on windy days!
