[TN-Bird] Cranes galore at Hop-In Refuge

Today while working in the general area of the Hop-In Refuge I counted over 300
Sandhill Cranes just out from the refuge gate & sign on Hwy. 89. There were at
least another 25-50 cranes that were present that I could not get a definite
count on as I was blocked by vegetation and a levee. Hop-In Refuge has been a
normal wintering area for Sandhill Cranes in West Tennessee for several years
and is the only area in West TN where large numbers of cranes are normally
present.

Hop-In Refuge is a TWRA refuge located on Hwy. 89 east of Kenton near the area
where Gibson, Weakly, and Obion Counties all meet. The area where the cranes
were seen is located in Obion County just north of the Obion River. The refuge
is closed until March 1 but the Cranes can by seen from Hwy. 89 or from
McClanahan Rd. If you take the first road to the left past the refuge if
traveling east on Hwy. 89 (Simmons Rd.), then the next left is McClanahan Rd.

There were also a few Lapland Longspurs present with Horned Larks along
McClanahan Rd.

Good birding,

Gibson County
