Nathan Klaus has asked me to pass along the following information. Nathan
is a graduate in the wildlife program at the University of Tennessee.
Please read the following and contribute where you can to the study:

I am currently conducting research into the habitat needs of shrikes in
Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee. As you
know they have about faded from the Georgia Piedmont and are
disappearing fast from the Coastal Plain. Most other states are in even
worse shape and many states have listed loggerhead shrike in recent
years as threatened or endangered. One puzzling aspect of this trend is
the seemingly abundant habitat that often goes unoccupied. This raises
the question what is good habitat, are shrikes using marginal habitat,
or are we mistaken in what we think is good habitat? To better identify
shrike habitat is a critical first step in conserving this species. I
need your help to do this. We are asking for interested individuals to
document habitat where shrikes are found for the next two years using
the following form:
http://www.georgiawildlife.com/assets/documents/Loggerhead%20Shrike%20Survey%20Form.pdf

Print a few out and carry them in your car when birding. The form won't
take more than about 5 minutes to fill out once you've done it a time or
two. Please be very thorough when filling it out. The most important
thing I need is the latitude/longitude in the correct format.
Unfortunately, if you do not have a GPS unit then you cannot
participate. As an aside we will be providing training, including GPS
training, to help with this and other projects in the coming months. If
you are interested please contact Tim Keyes at Tim_Keyes@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks,

Nathan
