I usually start my year at Reelfoot trying for that magic 100 number on the
first day of the year but with such goodies at Pace I decided to just do the
reverse of what I had done on Saturday. The weather was not as good but the
birds cooperated and I added a Thayer's Gull and LeConte's Sparrow for good
measure. I missed a few good birds like Sapsucker but White-crowned Sparrows
topped that list. The two places that I've never failed finding White-crowned
Sparrows up there, just would not cough up the prize. The 1st year Golden
Eagle was seen both days near the old maintenance building area, all the ducks
and geese stayed put along with the 4 species of grebes. I'll post my final
2005 photos soon.
I started just before dawn at Port Road and with a little coaching I had all
three of the owls that regularly call there on the year's list. I ended the
day watching the immature Tundra Swans feeding with a pair of Great Horned
Owls making whoooo-peeee talk at Hatchie NWR. It must be going around as I also
witnessed the pair of Bald Eagles copulating.........
It was a good start to the new year, with lots of hard to get birds already
on the list but I fell 3 short of the magic 100 but I now only have 200 more
to go to match last year;o)
Good Birding !!!
