When I returned the next day (Sunday), I managed to relocate the grebe 
around the same time & place I had seen it on Saturday (1:45 - 2 p.m.)  This 
time the light was much better and even when looking at the grebe from a 
greater distance it was easy to ID as a pie billed grebe. Saw it pretty 
close also... definitely pie billed.  Saturday the bird looked black & 
white, no brown on it, and I never saw it from a good angle.  So unless this 
was two different grebes (most unlikely), the sunlight made all the 
difference.
