[TN-Bird] Baffling bufflehead

Hello Birders,
I'm still shaking my head in disbelief over the bufflehead I just saw in a
rain-filled depression on the vacant field adjacent to the Hill's Grocery on
Annex Avenue just off Charlotte Pike in West Nashville, Davidson County.
As I pulled out of Hill's parking lot, I noticed something in the "pond"
created by our seemingly never-ending rains of the past few days, so I backed
up
to investigate. I readily realized that it was, indeed, a lone bufflehead
about 100 feet from me! Thinking it might be injured or sick, I got out of the
car to get a little closer to investigate. The bird immediately let me know it
was not ailing by quickly taking flight and heading toward the nearby
Cumberland River.
I have seen Canada geese and mallards in that field before when it "puddled
up," but a bufflehead!!!! I'm still baffled by what it was doing there! For
those in Nashville, this is the same spot on which those two domestic geese
took up residence several years ago until the wildlife officials captured them
and released them elsewhere (or so I was told).
This sighting just goes to show that one can never tell what one might see
and where when it comes to our little birdie buddies.
Cheers & prayers,
Dee Thompson
Nashville, TN
