While looking for or viewing the Ferruginous Hawk, be aware of the
possibilities that abound in the flocks of birds along the roads and in the
flocks
present. When Gene Knight and I first started looking through these huge
flocks
of Laps and Horned Larks we found Smith's and even a single McCown's
Longspur. I had an encounter once with 3 Chestnut-collared Longspurs (1 male- 2
females) one morning in some grass beside the road.
I've had 3 different Sprague's Pipits and 3 Snow Buntings down there over
the years. Paul Bagguley from England and I had a Snow Bunting as a bonus bird
down there one Christmas week. Don't overlook the gulls either as there have
been a few unexpected to show up like the immature Lesser Black-backed
hanging out down there now or the Glaucous gull and even the immature
Slaty-backed
Gull that stayed around for 3 days some years back.
The point is, don't spend all your time on the big birds, this area is way
under birdied and sitting and scanning through the flocks and being aware of
the small stuff may get you something you did not expect.............The
Tunica
County magic triangle (3-4-61 highways) can produce in the winter if you
just pay attention. DO sweat the small stuff;o)
Good Birding!!!
