Steve Matherly from Houston, Texas, got a couple of quick flight shots of
the Ferruginous Hawk and has allowed me to post them on the web site. For those
that might want to see this bird they might be helpful in the ID of a distant
flying bird.
In the immediate area, there are adult and immature Krider's which might
cause some confusion and you can also enjoy a lot of dark morph Red-tailed
Hawks, from Rufous to Harlan's (light and dark morph) that can be found in the
area on days birding. Also it does not hurt that there are LOTS of Sandhill
Cranes, Western Meadowlarks, Lapland Longspurs, a few Short-eared Owls and
tons
of 5 species of Geese in the area you keep you entertained.
The key area is off of Buck Island Road between Hambrick and 304 Highway in
Tunica Co. Mississippi but the Ferruginous Hawk does range out.
