Jerry,
I have had no reports of eagles in the vicinity of Racoon Mountain yet
this season. Please contact me to report any and all eagle sightings in
Tennessee through January 15. As a reminder, this weekend is the
national midwinter eagle survey. I have included my email announcement
from December 30 below. Thank you for your participation in this event!
 Mike

The annual bald eagle midwinter survey will be held next weekend -
January 7 and 8, 2005. Observers conduct surveys on standard routes -
primarily on Tennessee's lakes and large rivers - during the first 2
weeks of January each year, usually on 1 of 2 target days. Most survey
participants are employees of state or federal conservation agencies,
but private volunteers also participate in the survey.

This nation-wide effort began in 1979 when bald eagles were still
listed as endangered. Bald eagles were downlisted to threatened in 1995.
Tennessee's winter population currently peaks at 300 to 500 eagles. The
mid-January record for the state is 463 eagles counted in 1995. Highest
numbers during winter are usually found at: Reelfoot, Dale Hollow,
Kentucky, Chickamauga, Watts Bar, and Pickwick Lakes.

If you have participated in this count in the past, we hope you will
again join in contributing information about the numbers of eagles
across the state during the count. If you wish to participate, you can
contact your local bird club, state ornithologist, or TWRA regional
nongame biologist to learn if there are nearby standard routes that you
can help with. We also welcome information about eagle sightings -
especially multiple birds - in areas not covered by official counts.
Please contact me the email address below for more information.

If you have information about nesting eagles or falcons at any time
please contact the state ornithologist directly.

I have been asked whether B ald Eagles are being seen at Raccoon Mt. by
a
local resident who would like to show one to his mother-in-law.

I haven't been there this season and don't know the answer. Tips would
be
much appreciated. Thanks.
