Sorry for the late posting on this, but I was away from my computer til today.
This was only my second Le Conte's sparrow and the first seen on our family
farm. I got fabulous looks and this is a very striking bird! Fortunately the
bird popped up on a blackberry bramble for about 3 minutes weaving in and out
of the vegetation while I got close looks with decent light. Vegetation
consisted of a mixture of fescue, panicum grass, sericea lespedeza, and
blackberry. The bird responded to my pishing as I was checking out a briar
patch next to a small pond, but stayed pretty low to the ground.
I got really good looks at the orangish supercilium, buffy breast and flanks,
black streaks along the flanks (and a slight dark line across chest), white
belly, gray auriculars and nape with a brownish or purplish tinge to the nape,
white median crown stripe which became more buffy towards rear, dark eye line,
and black and buffy stripes on the back. The bird appeared to have a dull white
or buffy eye-ring as well. Here is a link to topozone for coordinates:

I hope this is a harbinger of birds to come in 2005!
