Ferruginous Hawk in Tunica Co. MS
Jackson, TN CBC

Don Manning and I began and ended the day doing the Jackson, TN CBC, with a
bit of an extended lunch break for a quick trip to Tunica Co. MS. After
getting word from Jeff that the Ferruginous Hawk was being seen in Tunica
Co., we were heading south at a not-quite legal speed. We had great looks at
the Ferruginous Hawk in flight, and some nice but distant looks at it
perched. And yes, Mark was forewarned that we might not be around during
lunch!

We didn't turn up any rarities on our CBC route, but did find a count-1st
Least Sandpiper feeding with a Pipit on a mudflat on Lake Graham, near
Jackson. We ended the day with Mark Greene, count compiler, watching
thousands of ducks at dusk as they wheeled around a WMA located just of Hwy
412 west of Jackson.

Jeff has posted some awesome shots of his latest find in Tunica Co. on his
website, and I'm sure some good flight shots will be following shortly. I've
posted a couple of distant flight shots of the Ferruginous on my site,
basically showing just the profile in flight, and whiteness of the bird from
below. These are at:

shot.

Good Birding, and I hope we have a very birdy 2005!
