MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
A: My name is Maxim Oustiougov, I am a program manager with Microsoft's
Terminal Services team.
  Ted_K_MS (Expert):
A: Hi and welcome! I am Ted Kummert, VP of the Security, Access and Solutions
Division at Microsoft in the Server and Tools Business. We're looking forward
to talking to you today about Terminal Services, remote desktop and our windows
presentation remoting technologies.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
A: Hi, I am Alex Balcanquall. I am the Product Manager for Terminal Services, I
am responsible for the TS Web Site, Pricing, Licensing Policies & outbound
communications.
  Tad_MS (Expert):
A: I am Tad Brockway, Group Program Manager, for the Terminal Services Product
Development team. Great to see our MVPs out there and looking forward to a good
chat!
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert): Hey,
I am Nelly Porter, lead Program Manager on TS team, working on Remote Programs
and RDP platform.

Chandra Shekaran (Expert):
Q: [3] Are there any enhancements to terminal services printing in longhorn?
A: Hi I am Chandra Shekaran, Product Unit Manager of Terminal Services. I am
responsible for the TS business and also run the Eng team. We ship the TS
product as well as several Windows desktop features such as Remote desktop.
  Ted_K_MS (Expert):
Q: [9] Have you taken any stance on integrating components of virtualization
into terminal services after the acq uisition of softricity?
A: We just recently closed this acquisition so are at the beginning of
working through our plans in this area. As we announced at close, we will
continue to offer the desktop, server and TS functionality - but have not
announced specifics on pricing and licensing.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [1] Are we going to be given any type of load balancing capabilities native
to Terminal Services in Longhorn?
A: At present time, we are not planning to introduce any additional load
balancing capabilities native to Terminal Services. One change in Longhorn
Server, though, is that Session Directory feature no longer requires Enterprise
Server SKU.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [6] is the licensing model changing any?
A: No, we will have all the same licensing modes. We will be adding support
for per user tracking in Beta 3.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [10] Wouldn't concurrent user licenseing dovetail nicely with your ISV of
the year Citrix as well as the whole Software as a Service model?
A: We have no plans to offer concurrent licensing.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [7] Is WPF remoting available in Beta form, what special steps do developers
need to take (if any) to remote WPF display objects
A: We are targetting efficient WPF app remoting for LH Server timeframe, the
release timeframe is not finalized. The remoting is done at the renderer level
(UCE - Unified Composition Engine) level, so there are no special steps for
developers to take for remote the WPF apps.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [5] Are there plans to introduce additional USB redirection and ActiveSync
support into Longhorn?
A: There is a new Plug and Play Device Redirection framework introduced in
Windows Vista and Windows Server codenamed Longhorn that lets certain classes
of PnP devices to be redirected - for Windows Vista, this includes digital
still cameras and media players (based on the Windows Portable Devices Media
Transfer Protocol), and Windows Embedded for Point of Service devices (based on
POS for .NET 1.1). There is no support for ActiveSync devices redirection yet.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [16] What are the differences between longhorn and 2003 server in terms of
number of sessions that can be supported on the same hardware?
A: It is too early to tell - Longhorn Server is still in Beta mode, so we can
not yet do apple-to-apple comparison between Windows 2003 Server and Longhorn
Server.
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert):
Q: [2] I was told 32-bit color mode is being introduced with enhanced
compression. How does it compare to ICA in low bandwidth scenarios?
A: Starting from Vista we introduced 32 bpp for RDP. We do not expect big
difference between 32bpp and 24bpp or lower bpp in the low bandwidth scenarios
based on our preliminary tests
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
A: Hi, I am Gaurav, a Program Manager in the Windows Terminal Services team.
  Chandra Shekaran (Expert):
Q: [4] What support will Longhorn Terminal Services provide for Avalon-based
applications?
A: We are working on supporting efficient remoting of WPF Apps in the
Longhorn Server timeframe. However, the release timeframe is not finalized. If
we don't make it, the fallback would be that WPF Apps would be remoted as
bitmaps.
Joy_Chik_MS (Expert): This is Joy Chik. I am the Development Manager for
Terminal Server.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [14] How do I defend the fact that the TS-Gateway needs to be a member of my
domain. Isn't security going to freak out that I am allowing unauthenticated
access to a domain member machine?
A: The TSG can be standalone if needed - but this means you would need local
accounts on the TSG. The other alternative is to put the TSG in the internal
network and use an SSL terminator in the DMZ instead.
Samim[MSFT] (Expert): Hello... My name is Samim Erdogan. I am a Program
Manager with the Terminal Services Team. I work on Licensing, Remote Programs,
and WebAccess. Looking forward to your questions and feedback...
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [11] How should we think about Citrix when Longhorn TS comes out, since you
guy are adding some of their key features?
A: Citrix will continue to add great value on top of our Longhorn Server
feature set. It's our goal, for Longhorn, for customers to have the basic
features in-the-Windows-box for scenarios of small to medium scale and
complexity. So, Longhorn Server will include features, like: Remote Programs
and a Terminal Server Gateway for VPN-less access to TS resources. In terms of
deployment scenarios, our ISV partners will add value on top of these features
as well as our existing features.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [8] Is ClearType finally supported over RDP. If yes, what are the
client/server OS requirements?
A: ClearType will be available in Vista RC1, it's disabled by default, you
can enable it through the RDP client experience tab. The Host OS is Vista or LH
Server, the client is Vista based RDP client on XP or above.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [3] Are there any enhancements to terminal services printing in longhorn?
A: There are performance and scalability enhancements to terminal services
printing in Longhorn, specifically redirected printers getting installed on
remote sessions much more quickly and a single Longhorn terminal server
handling a larger number of redirected client printers.
  Ted_K_MS (Expert):
Q: [19] We need ts sessions that span multiple monitors.
A: This feature will be available in our Longhorn Server release (I believe
starting with Beta 1). What we have implemented is a single desktop which can
be displayed across multiple monitors at the client. This is available via the
command line - mstsc.exe /span. mstsc.exe /help will give more info.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [25] I understand there have been significant changes toi group policies.
What has changed for terminal server? Is there anything that was difficult to
do previously that the new group policies will make easier?
A: We have not done much to Terminal Services group policies in Longhorn
Server. The main improvement is minor reshuffling of settings so they are
easier to find and comprehend. Obviously, there are also new policies to
control new features such as TS Gateway, ClearType support, etc.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [23] Will 8192k still be the "video memory" limit or will my
multi-high-res-monitor-users finally quit bugging me?
A: The only limit was the 1600x1200 client limit. With Vista and LH hosts we
can now have upto 4096x2048 using the UI or the /h: and /w: command lines.
Allso see the answer on monitor spanning from / multi-monitor Ted in a moment.
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [28] Any chance of a built in UPH Cleaner?
A: With the profiling improvements in Longhorn Server, UPH Clean should no
longer be necessary
  Chandra Shekaran (Expert):
Q: [15] When will we see enforcement of the Per User license model and how is
it going to be tracked?
A: We are currently targeting introdution of per-user license tracking in LHS
with enforcement to follow in a subsequent release. Depending on user feedback
in LHS Beta 3 we may move enforcement forward. Per-user license tracking will
require deployment of AD.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [29] q14 followup: if it is standalone do I use 2 sets of credentials? 1 for
gateway 1 for app?
A: Yes you would need to use 2 sets of credentials - this is why the TSG
being domain joined is so usefull.
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert):
Q: [13] Will the SDK improve?
A: We are working on improving our sdk with additional samples and
documentation. Additional set of apis that we will announce soon is
Collaboration space that allow people to write apps based on multi-party
sharing functionality. We plan to add samples on VC Channels ( managed
plug-ins) and additional samples for Gateway MSRDPClient interfaces

  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [31] Will LH TS be aware of the multiple monitors or will the dialogs still
stick in the seam?
A: The multiple monitor feature is 'monitor spanning' this will put the
dialog boxes on the seam, of course using 3 screens would avoid this issue :-)
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [4] What support will Longhorn Terminal Services provide for Avalon-based
applications?
A: Yes, we are working to support Aero-Glass via RDP, when connecting from a
Vista client. See Chandra's answer on this. We have more work to do and we
haven't yet targeted a specific release vehicle.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [33] hello trying to fix choppy internet pages?
A: Can you please clarify your question? Do you mean that IE in Remote
Desktop is not performing well? Under what circumstances?
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [26] Will Lognhorn TS support Aero-Glass thru RDP session for Vista?
A: See my previous answer on this one.
  Ted_K_MS (Expert):
Q: [34] Softricity licensing mode will now probably change from concurrent
users to device - how will that be handeled in Terminal Services?
A: Per previous answer, we're just past the close milestone and have not
announced specifics yet on pricing and licensing. Look for more information on
this soon.
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [30] Will there be any fault tolerance built around TS licensing, such as
the ability to define the same license on multiple license servers for
failover? Or does this strictly fall into the clustering realm?
A: To achieve redundant failover, you can install multiple License Servers
and install CAL packs on both. However, we do not have plans to support the
same CAL pack on multiple License servers.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [27] What changes will we see in device redirection and driver use?
A: As answered for a previous question, there is a new Plug and Play Device
Redirection Framework introduced along with guidelines for device driver
vendors to author their device drivers for Windows Vista in such a way that
they work seamlessly in remote sessions over RDP. These guidelines are included
in the public Windows Vista Logo document for devices
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/winlogo/hwrequirements.mspx). Also, some
additional information is included in a whitepaper posted at
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/driver/install/ts_redirect.mspx. A detailed
presentation on this new topic done at the Windows Hardware Engineering
Conference (WinHEC) 2006 can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/5/b/9/5b97017b-e28a-4bae-ba48-174cf47d23cd/SER014_WH06.ppt.
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert):
Q: [17] Will there be a set of "developing for terminal Services" guidelines or
best practices this time?
A: Yes, we have plans to provide the guidelines for developers to make their
apps more friendly in TS environment
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [36] Will there be Remote Program's SDK?
A: We will be updating the SDK for all our new features such as the mstcsax
client APIs. However there is nothing that you need to do to the apps to work
with remote programs so there are no SDK extenstions.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [24] We need pinting redirection like the Screwdrivers product does.
A: Functionality similar to the Screwdrivers product does not exist in
Windows Vista or Longhorn.
  Chandra Shekaran (Expert):
Q: [18] How will the softricity acquistion affect Terminal Services in Longhorn?
A: In the medium term, one should expect TS App Compat and efficiency of TS
deployments to significantly improve. That said, we just closed on the
acquisition and haven't finalized product evolution or announced licensing
plans going forward. We will announce more details in the next couple of weeks.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [38] will longhorn address the issues with the DOT4 port for multifuncion
printers?
A: There is current no plan to add special priting redirection support for
DOT4 multifunction printers. In the fallback solution, if the inbox driver
supports DOT4, we will utilize the functionality.
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [43] Regarding TS Web interface. Are there any advantages or limitations of
each mode? How is it configured?
A: In TSWebAcess: There are two modes: Simple Mode and GP mode. In Simple
mode, it is possible to point the TSWebAccess page to a particular TS
installation or deployment. You can use multiple TS Servers in this mode as
long as the server's are all in a farm accessible with the same DNS name. In
the GP mode, the app definitions come from Group Policy.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [42] Will TS allow the publishing of a remote desktop on a desktop, for
example, the publishing of an XP desktop, or a pool of XP desktops
A: Publishing is for the server Terminal Services role. However TS Gateway
supports connecting to XP so you can create .rdp file that will connect to XP
machines.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [41] it looks like double image.
A: I am not sure I have enough information to answer that either... :-) If
you have a specific problem in your deployment, I recommend that you post your
question to TS newsgroup:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/newsgroups/dgbrowser/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.terminal_services
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [37] Regarding the TS Web interface. There are 2 modes of operation. Server
mode and AD mode. It was also explained that Server mode only works for one
server where AD mode works for multiple servers. Can you clarify on what that
means?
A: The TS Web interface, or TSWA (think OWA ... but for TS), does run in two
modes. In 'Server Mode', you can point the TSWA web part at a single TS and it
will query the TS to determine which applications are available to be connected
to remotely. TSWA in 'Server Mode' will work in a cluster environment, as well,
as long as all TS servers in the farm are like-configured. In AD mode, you can
point TSWA at AD and it will provide a filtered view of apps for the user that
is logged in to IE, which is hosting the web part. So, you can think of the
Server Mode case as having the Server as the pivot - that is, there is no
concept of per-user targeting. And, you can think of the AD case as having the
User (primarily) as the pivot because it enables per-user targeting.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [47] I love the Rdesktops MMC interface, are there any enhancements to it
coming? One issue of course is if you resize it the TS window does not resize.
A: We will continue to make incremental improvements to RDP MMC interface for
LH Server. We will investigate the resize issue to see if it will fit in the
schedule.
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [43] Regarding TS Web interface. Are there any advantages or limitations of
each mode? How is it configured?
A: In GP mode, the TSWA can display applications from mutliple different TS
farms, whereas in contrast in Simple mode, only one TS farm's apps can be
displayed. Also, in GP mode, you can use GP (Software Policy) to control which
user sees which app. In Simple mode, all the apps on the TS farm are displayed
to every user of the webaccess. GP mode is a bit more complex to configure and
is recommended if you already use GP Software policy to distribute applications.
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert):
Q: [22] I would love to see the Terminal Services SDK with a broader support
for the .NET CLR. Do you guys plan to expand the TS APIs to be used with C#
.net or VB. net?
A: We are planning to provide some additional samples how to use managed code
for VC plug-ins, currently no plans to introduce TS managed version of our apis
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [46] Can the TS Web Access Web Part be modified to use a Remote Programs
data store other than a single terminal server or AD?
A: At this point this extensibility is not available.
  Ted_K_MS (Expert):
Q: [48] How about TS clients for other archetectures? Solaris for example?
A: We have a licensing program for RDP that 3rd parties are participating in
and producing clients today.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [32] Will profiles be re-worked in Longhorn. If so, do what degree?
A: I am not sure what we have announced but yes profiles and folder
redirction have been enhanced. For example profile sync has been vastly
improved and is more efficient, almost all folders can be redirected and syn is
super efficient for off line files; the new profile service ensure profile
corruption is mitigated in most scenarios. Basically vastly improved.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [49] I have a question about extending you desktop in TS to mulitple
monitors using a thin client. Will that be supported ?
A: We are adding span resolution across multiple monitors support in Vista.
For thin clients, we are working with WinCE vendors and XP embedded vendors to
add this feaure.
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [57] Can I make my own web part to communicate with TS Gateway and Remote
Programs?
A: THe TSWA webpart uses defined WMI apis on the TS server to collect the
application list and settings. It is possible to write a different web part or
even a different applicaiton to consume the same API from the TS server. The
WMI interface is available in the Beta2 release.
  Chandra Shekaran (Expert):
Q: [44] Will longhorn introduce any techno9logy that will make straming video a
realisitc possibility in a large scale Thin environment?
A: We are working on streaming video, likely for a post LHS release. When we
do ship this feature, it will attempt to utilize Client side rendering
capabilities as much as possible in order to maximize server scalability. For
'large scale thin environments' that require media streaming support, our
solution offering will involve the use of media server.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [56] Is XPS (metro) printing supported via RDP in LH?
A: Yes - if the terminal server has the right version matching XPS printer
driver installed for the printer being redirected from the client, printing
over RDP to this XPS printer will work in Windows Vista and Longhorn.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [53] What functions of LH TS are being dropped and moved to the next release?
A: All of the features we have publically announced and shown in Beta 2 we
absolutely expect to be in the product at RTM.
  Ted_K_MS (Expert):
Q: [59] Will the TS Web Access feature be able to be ported to a SharePoint
portal easily? i.e. is it a standard web part?
A: yes and you can build a custom web part or solution using the activex
control.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [58] Will a WinCE / Mobile RDP 6.0 client release?
A: There is a recent release of Mobile RDP client that's based on RDP 5.2. We
are working with the team to make RDP 6.0 available in the future.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [52] Are you planning on adding additional performance counters (PERFMON) to
the \Terminal Services\ group? For example, audio bandwidth, printer bandwidth ?
A: As far as I know there are no new counters added on a server side, but
there are several performance counters added on the client side in conjunction
with support for 32 bit-per-pixel color depth.
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
A: One of our desing goals for TSWA was to make it flexible enough to use in
different web application settings. Sharepoint is one of them. Embedding the
TSWA webpart in Sharepoint 12 will be supported.
  Dave Bishop [ms] (Moderator):
A: Just a heads-up on time here, we?re now about halfway through today?s chat.
Thanks.

Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [45] any plan to use SSO between TSWeb , TSGateway and balanced TSServer ?
support any client ?
A: In Longhorn Server, we implemented a Network Authentication feature so
that your local credentials that you provided at the login screen are
automatically forwarded (securely of course) to the Terminal Server. This
feature effectively enables SSO from the TS client to the TS server. We do not
have a true integrated SSO solution that crosses TS Web Access, TS Gateway, and
the Terminal Server. However, we do a pretty good job of supporting credential
caching and if it is allowed via your admin would enable an 'SSO experience'
for many scenarios. It isn't something we would refer to as SSO, of course.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [60] Can you tell us more about the profile sync service and how it works?
A: I can't find a good link at this time, however it is the same system as
Vista - it might be worth installing a Vista worksation and LH server to see
how much better it is. I have it on my latpop for my redirected my documents
and it ROCKS! - i never see sync windows and it works briliantly.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [50] Along those same lines Jim, I'd like to see the ability to group and
sort in the MMC as well as different colors for various status (connected,
disconnected, etc).
A: In LH Server, we are only planning for incremental improvements to our MMC
RDP client. We will investigate additional new feature requests, e.g. grouping
and sorting in the future release.
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [61] Any plans for manual license revocation?
A: Manual revocation and assignment of licenses is one of the scnearios that
we are looking at in order to improve the routine administration of a TS
deployment. We do not yet know if a solution will be available in LH timeframe.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [66] What about a RDP 6.0 Mac client? Will this RTM with LH or Vista?
A: We are working with the Mac Client team to release an RDP 6.0 based client.
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [64] Is a Longhorn TS Gateway compatible with 2000 and 2003 terminal servers?
A: The TS Gateway was designed in such a way to be independent of the target
RDP server. So, yes, it will work when connecting to a Windows 2000/2003
Server. And, will even work when connecting to a Vista or XP client that has
the Remote Desktop feature enabled.
  Chandra Shekaran (Expert):
Q: [20] Can someone discuss how the aquisition of Softricity will impact this
next release of TS?
A: In the medium term, one should expect TS App Compat and efficiency of TS
deployments to significantly improve. That said, we just closed on the
acquisition and haven't finalized product evolution or announced licensing
plans going forward. We will announce more details in the next few weeks.
  Ted_K_MS (Expert):
Q: [54] Healthcare is one industry that uses Terminal Services and
Multi-Monitor environments extensively, are you saying you require 3 monitors
on every clinicians desktop?
A: No, but the feature is better named "monitor spanning" than "multiple
monitors" and there are some implications of this.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [51] that it suffers, that it is not of the subject but I have a problem
with the installation of the administrative tools of AD on Vista Windows, any
aid agradecieria much.
A: The plans for Longhorn Server "adminpak" are still being finalized.
Presently, there is no LH Server adminpak that can be installed on Windows
Vista, although there are some discussions about how to make it possible. You
might get a more detailed and up-to-date response on the Longhorn Server
Management web forum:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=575&SiteID=17
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [65] It would be wonderful if someone could generate a listing of Terminal
Server related Group Policy settings that can be applied..along with any new
ones that may be available in Longhorn. Just a thought.
A: We will cover this in documentation. If there are any particular GP
settings that you are concerned about, please let us know...
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [72] when using the new seamless windows will the user be able to place them
on any monitor?
A: TS Remote Programs can only be opened on the primary monitor.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [62] Q49 Followup: What RDP version release will that be called so I know
what to look for?
A: The span resolution support will be available with Vista release, for the
client version support, you can go to Help->About to check the specific version.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [35] are there ANY details online about the revamped profile model?
excepting the fact that the folder is users now...
A: Please see my earlier answer. If i find a link whilst we are still in the
chat I will post it.

Q: [71] follow-up on question 42: is there a way to generate .msi.rap files
from custom RDP files for TSWA publishing via GP?
A: The MMC based UI tool only suports creating MSI packages for apps already
listed on the TS server. The UI will not support an arbitrary RDP file.
  Ted_K_MS (Expert):
Q: [63] Anything in the works for integrating what was acquired from Whale
Communications with Terminal Services? This would give Microsoft an SSL based
VPN solution completely integrated with the TS Web Portal and TS itself. This
is exactly what Citrix has today.
A: Whale is another acquisition where we are just passed the close milestone.
As we announced, we are continuing to offer Whale's Intelligent Application
Gateway product which includes publishing of terminal service applications. We
are just beginning to work on our future product plans - this is obviously a
scenario we will continue to support.
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [69] Whoops..Will the RDP stream be well secured out of the box? Resistent
toi expoits like Kane and Able?
A: Not aware of the specifics regarding Kane and Able, but our Network
Authentication feature will authenticate a TS user prior to all aspects of the
session being spun up, reducing the TS pre-authentication attack surface. And,
the SSL feature that we first shipped in Windows Server 2003 SP1 will continue
to be supported in Longhorn Server, which enables the TS client to authenticate
the identity of the TS server.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [55] Q47 followup: it would eb nice to have an option to capture windows
keys and alt-tab in the mmc interface also...
A: We will investigate this feature in our feature prioritizing for LH Server.
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [75] Any enhanced troubleshooting/diagnostic tools for licensing issues with
LH?
A: Diagnostics and troubleshooting of especially License Server discovery is
another of the scenarios we are looking closely to imporve in LH. We already
made a number of fixes to imporve the discovery and configuration diagnostics
and these improvemnets are available in Beta2.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [76] Why does RDP 6.0 not run on Windows 2000?
A: Because RDP 6.0 has a few dependencies on other Windows components that do
not exist on Windows 2000.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [77] Do you have any plans for any remote managment MMC snap-ins (like a
remote Task Manager)?
A: We plan to enable MMC as a TS Remote Program when Remote Desktop (admin
mode) is enabled on the server. All of the TS snap-ins will be remoteable using
RPC too.
  Chandra Shekaran (Expert):
Q: [68] Will there be a Java based RDP client, and if so what are the JVM
requirements?
A: We have no plans to release a general purpose Java based TS Client at this
time. We do have a RDP/TS Client licensing program that third parties can use
to build Clients on non-Windows platforms.
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [73] Why would Per User licensing not be enforced?
A: We focused on tracking of Per User CALs because that appeared to be the
most important customer scenario. We intend to look at enforcement in the
future, and we will consider that based deployment feedback.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [39] also as I can use adminpak for directory assets?.those I have not been
able them to install. .thanks
A: Presently you can not install 'adminpak' for Longhorn Server - it does not
exist. You might get a more detailed and up-to-date answer to general
management questions on Longhorn Server Management web forum:
http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=575&SiteID=17
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [78] What are the plans for per-device tracking for Windows Terminals?
A: The current plan is Per-Device tracking will work as it does today.
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [74] What RDP enhamcements will come with Vista SP1?
A: When we ship Vista, we will make an updated version of our TS Client
available via download from Windows Update ... for Windows XP SP2 clients.
Similarly, when we ship Longhorn Server we will update the client that is
available via Windows Update ... for Windows XP SP2 and Vista clients. This
approach will result in supported Windows clients to get access to the new
features in Longhorn Server. Current plan is for the Vista SP1 OS to include
the version of the TS Client that we ship with Longhorn Server, automatically,
so now download will be required for Vista SP1 clients.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [79] Will the WPF remoting be controllable using a group policy or reghack?
Sever wide only or also on an app by app basis for those applications that do
not do remoting well
A: We are considering adding group policy for WPF app remoting for
enable/disable the feature. However, it will not done on per app basis.
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert):
Q: [70] Will Windows XP Embedded clients be able to access the benefits of WPF
remoting enhancements?
A: To take advantage of WPF remoting Windows XP Embedded should be able to
install WINFX package. There is no current plans to enable WinFX for XPe, we
may enable it in the future releases.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [18] How will the softricity acquistion affect Terminal Services in Longhorn?
A: Jim - there are a few other similar questions that already have been
answered in this chat - please look up the answers. If there are follow-up
questions, do not hesitate to ask again.
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [80] Whoops again...Has there been any effort made to be able to "Hot Swap"
a terminal session acorrs terminal servers, like the VMWARE Vmotion capability?
A: Definitely an interesting scenario and is something we are investigating
for ... post Longhorn Server.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [83] Re Multi-monitor support - do you honestly think that suggesting a 3
montor display is really a good enough position to take on dialog box
positioning issues.
A: There are limitation to the feature, i.e. if you have two montiors dialog
boxes will appear on the seam. The only way to avoid this is to use 3 monitors,
some of our beta customers have absolutely it is worth it to them. However i
don't expect this to be a general approach.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [84] Has the ability to play MIDI files in an RDP session been added with LH
server?
A: We will continue to support audio redirection in LH server, including midi
files
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [87] Is there a way to manage .msi.rap packages once they've been created,
or will they have to be deleted and redeployed if a configuration change is
necessary (i.e. TSG names change)?
A: This scenario is one of the complexities of GP mode in TS Web access and
remote programs. When you create a new MSI package to reflect the change in
remopte program configuration, it will be necessary to use GP Software
Publishing features to remove and replace the old MSI file. You can do this by
removing the old GP and creating a new GP, or by using the uninstall.reinstall
option in Software distribution policy.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [89] Does MS have plans to introduce a termserv specialization to the MCSE
or even just broaden the training available for terminal services?
A: We are still finalising plans for how to include Terminal Services in the
Longhorn education wave. I hope we will have more contnent than previous
education waves.
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [85] Do you have any future plans to provide any additional load balancing
options?
A: Not at this moment. Terminal Services Session Directory is being made
available in Standard SKUs in Longhorn Server. Apart from that, we continue to
support Network Load Balancing (NLB), hardware load balancers (such as F5
BigIP, Cisco's CSM, Radware Web Server Director).
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [82] Any research being done to support Multiple Monitors/Desktops versus
the new Monitor Spanning functionality?
A: We understand that multi-mon is an important scenario and this is
something that we are investigating for a future release.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [86] Will there be support granular roaming/mandatory control over definable
HKCU keys in the profile?
A: We have no plans for roaming / mandatory controls for the profiles.
However it would be good for us to understand what keys you would like this
control over?
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [90] Is there a process for allowing users to only see their local printers
instead of server printers and other users printers?
A: All printers currently installed on the client will be made available on
the remote session if printer redirection is enabled before making the remote
connection - these could be locally attached or server printers. Only
administrators, domain printer administrators, and power users on the terminal
server can see other users redirected printers - regular remote desktop users
cannot see other users' redirected printers on the server.
  Ted_K_MS (Expert):
Q: As we get towards the end, it would be great to hear feedback from you on
those that are using TS in LH Server Beta 2 - any pain points, issues or
improvements you'd like to see and share with us?
  MaximOu_MSFT (Expert):
Q: [67] Will MS add functionality to allow them to monitor my machines and keep
tabs on what I'm doing at all times?
A: Can you please clarify this question? Is your question about remote
control/shadowing of user's sessions, monitoring health and performance of your
server computers, or something else?
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [92] Any schedule to share with RDP 6.0 Mac and WinCE/Mobile client support?
Vista RTM + ? LH RTM + ?
A: We are currently working on the schedule with teams across Microsoft, it
will be some timeframe post Vista RTM.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [88] Any plans to allow enable/disable of local drive redirection on a
per-user basis? The user property is already there, just need you to check it
at logon and enable/disable accordingly. Seems like it would be a small amount
of coding.
A: Local drive redirection has been enhanced to provide the user with a list
of local and network shared drives on the client in the Remote Desktop
Connection software UI - so the user can choose what drives they wish to
redirect before the connect. No per-user scoping property of what drives can be
redirected exists on the client or the terminal server.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [95] Is LH Beta 2 public yet?
A: Beta is not publically downloadable, however it is public and available
for TechNet Premium Subsctribers and MSDN subscribers.
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert):
Q: [91] I wanted to ask the video question again. It's a real hurdle for our
going totally thin. Does anyone know of any improvments in the market for
delivering video to TS clients?
A: We currently do not support video remoting for rich and thin clients, so
talking about video, you will be on the same boat as rich clients from MS TS
clients standpoint
  Maxim Oustiougov_MS (Expert):
Q: [99] Is it RDP 6.0 that will support monitor spanning?
A: Yes, RDP 6.0 will support multiple monitor spanning. To use it, type
"Mstsc.exe /span"
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [94] You can selectively roam or not roam certain folders in the profile. It
would be nice to be able to roam or not roam certain definable keys in HKCU,
instead of all or nothing today.
A: This is something we have investigated, but no concrete plans. I am
interested in your thoughts on how this would be configured (e.g. script?, UI?)
... if you want to answer in the Guest Chat, I will definitely read the
transcript later.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [81] We have a pur MS Terminal Server Farm 4000 client with out Citrix, with
client win3.11, NT 4.0 2000 XP. Have Longhorn a Terminal Server for the Clients
? When not how connect to the Longhorn Server.
A: LH TS Clients will be availble for XP SP2 upwards (including 2003). RDP
5.1 clients can continue to access to LH Terminal Servers - but you will not
get any of the new features.
  Dave Bishop [MS] (Moderator):

Q: [97] Will RDP 6.0 Mac and Win CE/Mobile have the same feature set as the
Windows client?
A: We are working with these teams currently on the feature set and schedule
for mac and CE/Mobile. Most likely there will be smaller feature set comparing
to Vista RDP client since the client OS does not have the rich support as Vista.
  Samim[MSFT] (Expert):
Q: [96] Name three things that have been added into Longhorn to simplify
administration of my Terminal Servers. Please keep your answers from the
trenches point of view.
A: The most important imprivement in terms of administration is the
integration of our managememtn tools in to Role Management / Server Management
tool. This allows our server role and subroles to be installed in an already
functioning configuration in most settings. The second important change is the
improvemnt in Licenisng Server improvements, including improvmenets in
discovery and per-user licensing mode. Finally, the third is the overall
improvements in management tools, to make them more usable. If you want to see
more imporvementes or have suggestions, please let us know, either here, or at
our TS team blog at http://blogs/msnd.com/ts.
  Maxim Oustiougov_MS (Expert):
Q: [98] What is the current position regarding server health monitoring - will
functional validation of critical services be available?
A: We are planning to continue to provide MOM management packs for Terminal
Services, including new functionality in Longhorn Server. Also, there is a new
server health view available in role management tool (LH Server Beta 2) for a
single server.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [102] Will RDP 6.0 Server side be added via windows updates to Win 2003 TS?
or can it be downloaded?
A: The new LH feature set will be available on LH.
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert):
Q: [93] Any plans to fix slow file/folder enumeration when using local drive
redirection? Currently enumeration can be painfully slow, regardless of
bandwidth between client and server.
A: We are in the middle of investigation of our perf for all types of
redirections, including file redirection. However we would not expect to have
the same perf as FTP when we will redirect files over RDP.
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [101] Was there an answer about Terminal Sessions being "Hot Swapped" in LH?
A: Yeah, I answered it. Here's my answer: A: Definitely an interesting
scenario and is something we are investigating for ... post Longhorn Server.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [100] Follow up to Q 88: Not per-drive, but turning the local drives feature
on/off on a per-user basis, using the checkbox in AD that has existed for many
windows versions. As it exists now local drive redirection is an all or no
users proposition.
A: None of the device redirection features can be turned on/off on a per-user
basis through any of the terminal server management tools, and this includes
drive redirection.
  Tad_MS (Expert):
Q: [105] Not sure if it's been asked yet - where are you guys at on user
experience monitoring? Any desires on getting into that space with the core TS?
A: No concrete plans, but something we are thinking about. There are
definitely some interesting scenarios that could be enabled.
  Maxim Oustiougov_MS (Expert):
Q: [104] How match user you can put on on LH Server - Window 2003 Server ?
A: Our goal for scalability is to be as good or better as Windows Server 2003
in common scenarios. Presently there are no conclusive measurements since the
product is still in Beta mode and we are actively working on improvements.
  Chandra Shekaran (Expert):
Q: [104] How match user you can put on on LH Server - Window 2003 Server ?
A: The capacity of a TS Server deployment depends heavily on the Apps being
hosted and the usage profile. Perf measurements on prior server releases have
been published on msft.com. Our goal for LHS scalability is to be on par with
or better than WS03.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [107] Any plans on recording (Tivo) RDP sessions?
A: We have no plans for this.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
A: Thank you for attending this chat session.
  Alex Balcanquall MS (Expert):
Q: [106] Are there any Microsoft events that relate to Terminal Services?
A: We leverage the main MS events - TecEd and ITForum.
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert):
Q: [103] How match more Bandwith you need in RDP 6.0 - RDP 5.2
A: Depends on the scenario, if you are talking to task worker or knowledge
worker payload . Our goal is to rich parity with RDP5.2 in our bandwidth
consumption. However, with introduction of 32 bpp we expect our bandwidth will
improve in some situations

  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [109] Will drag and drop be possible between an RDP session and the local
client?
A: We are investigating drag and drop feature support for RDP in LH server
time frame.
Joy_Chik_MS (Expert): thanks for taking the time to chat with us today.
A: The AD checkbox affects only ICA clients and not RDP clients.
  Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [110] Any plans to display redirected drives as letters rather than shares?
A: You would have to map the shares to a drive letter - it does not happen by
default, still shows up as shares on the server.
  Nelly_Porter_MS (Expert):
Q: [108] Follow up to Q 93: Local file/folder enumeration is painfully slow as
compared to Citrix, and has been since you introduced the feature. I would
expect that you should be able to improve performance substantially.
A: We are working on improvements in multiple areas of redirection, file
redirection is slow and we will work to make it better, however no promises
that it will be significantly improved

Gaurav_MS (Expert):
Q: [112] Follow up to Q 100: Of course it only affects ICA, I want it for RDP
clients! This would be a great feature, with small amount of coding on your
part.
A: No support for it in Longhorn.
  Joy_Chik_MS (Expert):
Q: [111] Follow up to MIDI question. Are you saying that MIDI files will play
through audio redirection? The MS KB says otherwise.
A: MIDI was not supported for WS03 Server, for LH Server, we are working on
enabliong audio redirection for midi formats.
