Hi People,
I need some help, but mostly looking for some feedback on whether anyone else
this seen this issue.
I've got a customer whose been having some fairly severe server hanging
problems. Systems are HP BL20p G2, dual 2 GHz cpu, 4 GB RAM, 36 GB disk,
Windows Server 2003.
A major cause of hanging was switch/NIC problems due to a Cisco switch bug.
This has been resolved but there are some continuing problems.
We are seeing incredibily high handle counts against some user processes, up to
10-20 million or more. Sysinternals handles.exe shows that the bulk of these
are authentication token handles.
The servers have Appsense peformance suite (V2) installed, and the "really"
interesting thing is that when Appsense is uninstalled (not just disabled) the
handle leak stops. However not all users are showing handle leaks (this is
really driving us crazy!).
What seems to make this relevant is that we had a logon on one server when it
appeared to be going off. Logins were failing wih an "insufficient resources"
error, the IMA service was staring to have problems (could not connect to
datastore errors, misreported load balancing) and perfmon etc was just failing.
Found 2 instances of iexplore.exe that had a handle count of 30 million
between them and killed them. Restarted the IMA service, and everything
returened to normal.
While that doesn't make the handle leak the server hang culprit, it sure is
suggestive. Microsoft are eager for a crash dump, but getting one on the new
BL20p systems isn't exactly easy. Neither the ILO or even a local keyboard
(USB) will work because the NT keyboard crash dump code only works for PS2
keyboards.
Anyway, until we get a definitive answer from Microsoft, my big question is are
we the only people in the world who have seen this problem. Has anyone else
noticed handle leaks on their 2003 systems. Is anyone else having odd hang
issues and have they looked for handle leaks?
Any feedback would be welcome.
regards,
Rick
