Doug,
You might also want to read an article that I co-authored with Wavecrest and
Marvell. It discusses the use of de-emphasis and its impact on jitter in a
backplane environment.

Doug:
I asked the same question a year or so ago.
You could try the following Maxim app note for a start.

The real theory behind this can be found in "Digital Communication" by Lee
and Messerschmitt. It makes good bed time reading.

Subject: [SI-LIST] Equalization of transmission lines?
The keynote speaker at PCB East 2002 was Dr. Henri Merkelo, Director
Ultrahigh Speed Digital Electronics, atSpeed Technologies Corporation. He
gave an interesting presentation showing how absorption losses in
dielectrics could result in eye diagrams that were virtually closed. But,
with the addition of basic RC equalization circuits, the losses could be
compensated for, and normal eye diagrams restored.
Can anyone refer me to other articles or presentations that are available
on the web that discuss this type of issue? I'd like to learn more about it.
Doug Brooks
