Agreed.  Although, there is a great difference between mentoring a newcomer, 
and a newcomer getting on the public address system of a several thousand 
person company and asking how to plot a current in HSPICE.  How many times 
would that behavior be tolerated before the newbie was escorted out the door?   
(Or, how many times would the request need to be answered for the PA system to 
become clogged with such requests.)

 

Furthermore, it would be derelict of duty for a mentor to deprive his/her 
charge of the opportunity to learn to help themselves.   A good mentor knows 
it?s often necessary to back off and let the newcomer struggle with a problem.  
It seems that is exactly what Ed was trying to do.

I agree with this poster's comments. I have spent 10 seconds reading the 
original question and 4 minutes reading all the flaming and commentary about it.

If you don't want to contribute on this list to the development of lesser 
experienced engineers, that is your prerogative. However if you are a member of 
the IEEE, you have attested to the code of ethics which can be found at

If a posting is clearly off topic, it is appropriate for the moderator to refer 
the poster to the FAQs for the list. My advice to those of you who feel you are 
above answering such questions is to learn to be more tolerant of others and if 
you don't want to assist the poster, delete their message from your folder and 
move on. You will have more time to dwell on your own ego, and the rest of the
