I agree with Tony, the meter will not read zero if the meter is placed after
the bridge rectifier. The reading you will get depends on the type of AC
measurement capabilities your meter has. If it has a True RMS capability it
should read the RMS value within bandwidth limitations. If not then you may
get average or not depending how the AC was implemented.

I don't agree that the average voltage is zero since we are dealing with
full-wave rectification. Only full non-rectified waveform will be average
DC=0.
What Doug describes in his circuit (combination of bridge rectifier and
meter across the bridge is what used to be called and taught as Rectifier
Ammeter or Rectifier Voltmeter.

In my recollection, you are correct, with one small addition: On the
DC scale, the meter will read the average value, which will be 0V.
Don't forget that the AC signal is swinging between +1V and -1V.
