Interesting... It apperas that CPW construction has hit others hot buttons as 
well as mine. Nice to hear from Ed and Scott. Trust what they say.

The use of wide guard "bands" (as opposed to guard traces) achieves a much 
lower impedance structure and will indeed increase the capture of errant 
fields (i.e., provide a termination point for them) and thereby reduce the 
crosstalk to adjacent pairs. 

Although it has recently been noted on this list that physical separation of 
traces is thought by some to be more effective than interspersed grounds (of 
whatever width), My experience indicates considerable improvement in signal 
isolation when properly grounded guard traces or bands are implemented. And a 
higher trace density is also achieved relative to just increasing trace 
separation.
