I totally agree with the original poster and the supporting responders.

In my opinion, it is inappropriate to apply different levels of common courtesy 
depending upon the medium of interaction.  As Eric said, not being face to face 
is no excuse for an unprofessional attitude.  Certainly there are those who 
enjoy a good flame war and, to them, I say please keep it off the list; nothing 
is keeping you from emailing your comments directly.  This isn't the "thought 
police", after all, just a request for professional behavior on a professional 
*public* mailing list.

Debates are entirely appropriate and often illuminating; but there is 
absolutely no need for a spirited debate to devolve into personal or cultural 
attacks.  I personally find such behavior to be quite off-putting and I'm 
relieved to learn that I am not the only one.
