Voltage level for one. HSTL is a 1.5V standard. SSTL_2 is a 3.3V standard. 
Also, SSTL uses a Series Stub Terminating
(the SST in SSTL) resistor that is not present in HSTL. Other than that HSTL 
class I and SSTL are similar.
