Why not get more COM ports in your PC. The PCI COM port card is inexpensive. 
You can have 6 COM ports in a PC and talk to all 5 devices at the same time.

PC experts,
Does any one know of a 1 to 5 Com port multiplexer/arbieter chip.   I am
trying to communicate with  5 devices via one com port on my PC... so we
need to multiplex the inputs and give priority to one device at a time.
