[SI-LIST] Serpentine switchback lengths

In Howard johnson article on serpentine delays. For 1ns rise time signal
the maximum useful coupled-switchback length is arrived as
about 1 in. (2 in. round trip). Is this 1inch; Is the width of
serpentine structure ? or the total length of U ?.
