[SI-LIST] Hello from the staff

Hello,
First, let me apologize for the intrusion and somewhat off-topic post. I
don't ordinarily step in like this, but I feel that the circumstances
warrant it.
I run the systems here at FreeLists, and I'd like to send a brief note
about what happened on si-list this afternoon. I've already seen a couple
of messages in the archives about it, so I guess I don't need much of an
ice breaker.
The thing is, this is a free/Free service. We make no money, sell
nothing, and get nothing in return for what we do here. This afternoon,
the mail queues were so stuffed (roughly 30k emails at one point) that the
quality of service for everyone basically flew out the window. So for
those of you who received those huge messages, I apologize, and for those
who didn't yet, you won't -- I was forced (after letting them sit there
for 8 hours) to delete them from the queue.
During those 8 hours, our T1 was completely saturated, meaning no one else
was getting any mail. I really hate to do what I had to do this evening,
but when it comes to a near denial of service for the majority of list
subscribers, drastic measures sometimes have to be taken.
Please refrain from sending large attachments in emails, whether you're on
a mailing list or not. Take advantage of places like geocities and
tripod, use their bandwidth for things that should be on the web anyway.
We're constantly looking for ways to improve our services, and well, this
will prompt us to work a little more quickly toward solutions that will
prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future.
I hope you all enjoy what FreeLists has to offer. Feel free to direct any
questions or comments to myself or staff@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Thanks,
John
