Oscillators with clipped sine outputs use less (sometimes <<1mA) power
supply current than those with fast edges (say 20-30mA).
Realtime clock chips also commonly use <<1mA, and the combination keeps time
and date during power off with a supercap or small battery. Dallas Semi (now
Maxim) have some app notes on the subject.
