ADS from Agilent has such a link to Matlab. More than that, it already
integrates many of the capabilities of HSPICE and Matlab,
For example:
1. SPICE simulation capability with support for most of the latest
device models used by HSPICE.
2. Lossy distributed transmission line models as well as Touchstone
S-parameter support for accurate channel modeling
3. Signal processing simulation including complex waveform simulation
and built-in behavioral models for functions like equalizers, clock
recovery and error correction. Also includes extensive BER/ Eye diagram
analysis capability similar to Agilent test equipment.
Finally, there are links to Cadence's Analog IC tools and Matlab, to
minimize the need to translate code and designs.
Downside:
1. This integrated capability represents a significant percentage of
the entire ADS suite of tools (= not cheap).
2. Some library translation and customization probably required to use
the many levels of integration

Subject: [SI-LIST] Using Matlab for SERDES simulations
In the past couple of years, several vendors have moved from Hspice to
Matlab as the tool of choice for simulations of their SERDES devices.
With the Matlab tool it's possible to run simulations of channels
including decision feedback equalization (DFE), which is present in the
latest SERDES devices to minimize reflections and provide continuous
equalization while traffic is running. Using Matlab as a channel
simulator also provides BER contour plots, bathtub curves, etc.
The required models for the channels are S-parameter files in Touchstone
format. The SERDES models are embedded in the simulator, so no models
are provided to the customer.
What are the thoughts of the SI community on where this trend is going?
Will EDA tool vendors begin to integrate Matlab into their simulators?
And how does this impact the effort to create macromodels for SERDES
devices?
Thanks and regards,
Fabrizio Zanella
