As Derek correctly identified, the topic of 'outsourcing' is a political
hot topic. I believe this is true not only in the US but also in just
about all technologically cognizant countries worldwide gauging from
media reports.
As far as discussion of such on si-list, I personally feel the topic is
relevant to today's engineers and as such don't think that the civil
expression of ones opinion's in constructive discussion should be stifled.
That being said, those engaging in such discussions should endeavor to
stick to the facts and not take 'stereotypical cheap-shots' at others
that could be construed as personal attacks or racist in nature.
I believe the original question stemmed from the fact that there seemed
to be an inordinate number of questions as of late that appeared to
originate either from students looking for quick answers to their
homework or from others who find it more expedient to get others to do
their research for them. A large percentage of the these questions
happened to be posted from addresses associated with India.
So as far as list etiquette is concerned, I think discussion of
outsourcing issues is a relevant topic. Also, I think the 'friendly
advice' given to those who come across as looking for the easy way out
is also OK as long as it is done in a civil and non-derogatory manner.
