Rajapalani,
I would start by making your design immune to electrostatic discharge
(ESD). That will take care of most of the coupling paths by which
electrical noise can get into or out of your product, and will also take
care of many of the noise victims in your design that lead to poor noise
immunity from all sources. I suggest starting with three articles that
I wrote on this subject:
* Barnes, John R., "Designing Electronic Equipment for ESD Immunity",
published in the July 2001 Printed Circuit Design magazine (vol.
18 no. 7, pages 18-26). (download from
http://www.dbicorporation.com/esd-art1.htm )
* Barnes, John R., "Designing Electronic Equipment for ESD Immunity
Part II", appeared on the pcdmag.com web site in November 2001.
(download from http://www.dbicorporation.com/esd-art2.htm )
* Barnes, John R., "Designing Electronic Systems for ESD Immunity",
published in the February 2003 Conformity magazine (vol. 8 no. 1,
pages 18-27). (download from
http://www.conformity.com/0302designing.pdf )
These articles summarize my personal experiences over 27 years as a test
engineer at IBM, product developer at Lexmark, and EMC/EMI/ESD engineer
at dBi Corporation, plus practical information gleaned from over 1500
source documents on designing for ESD immunity. Please see my
bibliography on designing electronics for electrostatic discharge (ESD)
immunity at
http://www.dbicorporation.com/esd-anno.htm
Another area to concentrate on is bypassing, decoupling, and power
distribution. My bibliography for these topics covers 830+ source
documents, and is at
http://www.dbicorporation.com/pwr-bib.htm
<bias alert>
My latest books, Robust Electronic Design Reference Book, Volumes 1
and 2 , ( http://www.r-e-d-inc.com/book-out.htm ) devote well over
1,000 pages to practical methods for designing electronic products (for
sale to others) and electronic equipment (for use by your own company/
organization) for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electromagnetic
interference (EMI), and ESD immunity:
* Chapter 3 on the development process.
* Chapter 4 on noise sources and noise-coupling paths.
* Chapters 5 to 20 on selecting components.
* Chapters 21 to 25 on circuit design.
* Chapters 26 to 36 on physical design.
* Chapters 37 to 38 on software and watchdog timers.
* Chapters 40 to 45 on testing and characterization.
* Appendices A to K, and N for background/support material on
designing for EMC/EMI/ESD.
These books came out less than two weeks ago, so you may have trouble
finding a copy to peruse, to see how well they will meet your needs. I
have found a number of booksellers in the US that are carrying the
books--or will special order them--by searching for ISBN 1-4020-7739-4
(for the 2-volume set).

I've been studying electronics for 43 years, and concentrating on
EMC/EMI/ESD for the last 13 years, and I'm still learning! In the last
two weeks my clients and I ran into--and solved--two new problems that I
had never heard of nor seen before. This last week three orders for
electronics and electronics-related books arrived, adding 28 books to my
to-be-read stacks. And over the weekend I ordered another dozen
electronics books via the Internet, to supplement the 2688 electronics
books already in my collection, but those orders haven't been confirmed
yet...
