In addition to things mentioned, if things start changing
"too much", XP's activation may be de-activated (if not
a "corporate" version).
Much probably could be handled by plug-n-play, but
of particular importance may be the BIOS's disk
driver (like if one MB is in LBA mode and the
other is in some other mode it probably wouldn't
even be able to get to safe-mode).

I agree with Jeff. The mother board devices (eg. chipset) are optional to be
plug and play. Changing Motherboard is not a usual situation. I don't
thinks MS handles it properly.
