Small, glass bulbs with neon (maye also some other gas?) used
sometimes as indicators. You even get a visual confirmation when
they conduct an ESD:)
Depending on the type, the breakdown voltage ranges about 60-200V.
They were relatively cheap when I was experimenting with them for
this same purpose, about 10 years ago. Much less expensive than gas
filled spark arrestors. They present very small capacitance to the
signal. They are just two short pieces of thin wires at several
millimeters from each other, immersed in gas.
They are not good if there is DC voltage present, because once they
conduct the DC voltage must go pretty low before they stop
conducting.
