Hello Neil
Having looked briefly at the inverted-F antenna a while ago, I found that
the bandwidth when matched increases with the conductor height above the
ground plane, also affected by overall size, assuming you are working at
less than around lambda/2, and the height is smaller still. So for broader
bandwidth you need a larger antenna. I suspect some use more complicated
shapes to provide more gradual impedance matching.
